Best In Show Judge Elliott Weiss Of Eagle, Idaho Heads Panel For 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
NEW YORK - In 1956, Elliott Weiss attended his very first dog show - the Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show - and it was love at first sight, leading him to a life in the sport of dogs. Fifty-four years later, he will have the ultimate honor in the sport - judging Best In Show at the 134th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show February 15-16, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Club announced today the panel for its 2010 show, a lineup that includes 41 judges from 18 states, Canada and England.
Mr. Weiss spent 24 years as a top professional handler from 1969 through 1993. Among his big accomplishments, he handled an Irish Setter, Ch. Meadowlark's Anticipation, to a Sporting Group win at Westminster in 1984. He started judging in 1994 and has judged all over the world, including six previous assignments at Westminster, where he judged the Terrier Group in 2004 and the Sporting Group in 2008. A native New Yorker, he now lives in Eagle, Idaho.
During his life in dogs, Mr. Weiss has owned and bred Cocker Spaniels, Clumber Spaniels, Giant Schnauzers, Pointers and English Setters. He still owns, exhibits and breeds English Setters under the Wyndswept kennel name with his wife, Dr. Deborah Mack.
Group judges will be Dr. Donald Sturz, Jr., from Centerport, NY (Sporting); Mr. W. Everett Dean, Jr. of Richmond, VA (Hound); Mrs. Mrs. Kimberly Meredith-Cavanna of Pleasant Hill, CA (Working); Mrs. Loraine Boutwell of Kansas City, MO (Terrier); Mrs. Shirley Limoges of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (Toy); Mrs. Dorothy Dalton of Stuart, FL (Non-Sporting); and Ms. Linda More of Cary, NC (Herding). Mrs. Jennifer Pahl of Princess Anne, MD will judge the Junior Showmanship Finals.
There are 173 breeds and varieties eligible for competition, including three new breed eligible for the first time for judging at Westminster: the Irish Red and White Setter (Sporting Group), the Norwegian Buhund (Herding), and the Pyrennean Shepherd (Herding).
The panel is subject to final approval by the AKC.
The Westminster Kennel Club (www.westminsterkennelclub.org) is America's oldest organization dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs. Established in 1877, Westminster's influence has been felt for more than a century through its famous all breed, benched dog show held every year at New York's Madison Square Garden. The show is America's second longest continuously held sporting event.
