BEDLINGTON TERRIER

The Bedlington originated in northern England. It was used by gypsies to catch game. The gentry, impressed by their hunting prowess, hired the dogs that were stealing their game to rid their property of vermin. This may be how the "gypsy dog" came to the attention of Lord Rothbury of Bedlington in Northumberland County. The breed became known as Rothbury's Terrier. It became a favorite of coal miners, who discovered that its instinct could be used to rid the mines of rats. The miners also used the Bedlington for sport, racing them against each other and the Whippet.
